A quiet Riviera Maya Hotel

Hotel Tierra Maya, on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, is in the small town of in Xcalak, a six-hour drive from Cancún. With the second largest coral reef in the world, the Meso-American Reef system, just beyond the hotel’s pier, most vacationers are lured here for the snorkelling, diving and fly fishing. And, of course, for the privacy and affordability — a room goes for US$80 to $105 nightly. There are six rooms, all with sunny yellow walls, terra-cotta tile floors, ceiling fans and balconies that overlook the Caribbean. Rates include breakfast and the free use of bikes and kayaks, but not the 12-percent federal tax. (800) 216-1902.
