Light the flamenco fire in Madrid

For a night of real flamenco music, steer clear of tablaos which, for the most part, offer touristy shows that lack passion. Try one of the following bars instead:

La Soleá (34 Calle Cava Baja; tel: 011-34-91-366-0534), once a small bar, which moved to larger quarters last year. The atmosphere is friendly with a resident guitarist willing to accommodate impromptu singers — if you so dare.

Flamenco Candela (2 Calle del Olmo; tel: 011-34-91-467- 3382) is on a quiet corner in Lavapiés, the city’s Gypsy neighbourhood. While it doesn’t feature live shows, its atmosphere is as flamenco as it gets.

Cardamomo (15 Calle Echegaray; tel: 011-34-91-369- 0757, has become one of the classic stops. It features live music pretty much nightly.

Espacio Flamenco (26 Calle Ribera de Curtidores; tel: 011-34- 91-298-1912; is newer. On top of live shows, it offers courses in flamenco and sells memorabilia.
