Rockies in the raw

Calgary may be the heart of the New West, but the Old West is still alive and well throughout Alberta and the Cowboy Trail is the perfect way to explore it. The first leg of the four- to five-day trip is from Mayerthorpe to Rocky Mountain House, a former trading centre and National Historic Site. There are plenty of opportunities for trail-riding, whitewater rafting and canoeing. Head towards Calgary and then west to Bragg Creek, a frontier-style village populated by artisans selling interesting crafts, jewellery and other works. Next drive south to the Diamond Valley and Bar U Ranch, which was once Canada’s largest. Continue south to Waterton Lakes National Park to witness some truly spectacular mountain scenery. Finally, stop in Cardston to visit the Remington Carriage Centre’s collection of horse-drawn carriages and buggies. Go to www.thecowboytrail.com or www.travelalberta.com for more detailed itineraries, maps and information on accommodations, restaurants and attractions.
