The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival is free and attracts top names.

Say hello to Charlie
Summer jazz festivals are seemingly a dime-a-dozen, but the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, taking place August 23 to 25, has a few things going for it. It’s completely free, and it takes place in the (now very hip) areas where the Bird used to live and work — Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem and Tompkins Square Park in the Lower East Side. It also attracts top talent, with this year’s edition featuring names such as Jimmy Heath, Christian Scott and Sheila Jordan. cityparksfoundation.org.
