The UK’s City of Culture

The sixth-century walled city of Derry-Londonderry in Northern Ireland has been named the first ever UK City of Culture (cityofculture2013.com). To celebrate, it hasn’t just spruced itself up but will also spend $25 million in programs, including concerts, ballet and a punk-rock musical. The Georgian Beech Hill Country House Hotel, just outside town, makes a quiet home base. Nightly rates start at £95, full breakfast included. beech-hill.com.
