US Virgin Islands cottages

Maho Bay’s 114 cottages on St. John are basically canvas-roofed treehouses — and they couldn’t be more perfect. All have bed linens and rudimentary kitchens — cooking utensils and a propane stove. Built on stilts, the cottages connect to the beach via stairs and walkways; there are no night lights — just you, the stars and a lot of very loud tree frogs. But all this nature has its price: there are no private bathrooms or hot-water showers. Doubles from US$120. (800) 392-9004; www.maho.org .
