Amtrak’s Coast Starlight takes you back to the good old days

Leave your car behind in Vancouver and travel to San Francisco at the old-world speed of train-time. Amtrak’s sleeper car passengers enjoy three meals a day in the dining car (served on white tablecloths, no less), complimentary wine tasting and movies in the theatre car. After a leisurely chug to the Golden Gate city, spend a couple of days exploring San Francisco’s spectacular parks, art museums and beat-friendly bookstores on foot, then train home. Watch eagles catch fish and see the sun rise over Mount Shasta. For a longer trip, go all the way to LA and make a stop in Seattle on your return. Amtrak shares the tracks with Pacific Railway, so this trip is not recommended if time is an issue – delays can be as long as 12 hours. The Vancouver-Seattle leg of the ride is by Amtrak’s motor coach (read:bus), so you may want to drive that section yourself. Leave ample time for the border crossing. The trip costs about US$430 each way for one person for the Super Roomette, and only an additional US$120 each way for two people, since the cabin holds two.
