What your colleagues never told you about their most astounding, heart-warming and horrifying vacation moments

It’s a truism that travel is about discovery, and that the most unanticipated events create more memorable vacations than those that run smoothly.

So there you are, in one of the world’s most beautiful locations, about to enjoy some much-needed rest, when it happens — the most awe-inspiring, ridiculous, terrible thing you could possibly imagine. There’s no way you could anticipate your mother-in-law getting caught stealing in Hawaii. And you probably couldn’t arrange to get a look at the Hale-Bop comet from 9000 metres up if you wanted to. But on vacation, serendipity happens, but so does slapstick.

We asked you to write in with your best, worst and most unusual holiday stories. The response was overwhelming, which made the selection for this issue a tough job. After days of deciphering handwriting (no mean feat!), we found we had so many great anecdotes and travelogues that we’d never be able to fit them all in.

The linked pages in the blue box are just a small sampling of the best.
