Free Spirit Spheres offer the ultimate recuperative retreat: an overnight stay in a beautiful handcrafted wooden sphere hanging from the trees

High design
Tree houses for adults have been growing in popularity in the last decade. This one tops the bill. Think Robinson Crusoe meets Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey --high design in the forest. Take your pick between Eve, a basic sphere that sleeps two, and Eryn, which sleeps three and comes complete with a sink, fridge and microwave. Don't worry about missing out on basic comforts -- there’s a conventional building across the pond that houses bathrooms, showers and a sauna. But fear not; you don’t have to go that far when nature calls -- there’s a composting toilet at the base of each of the spiral staircases that lead to your spheres.
The spheres hang from several trees at once by cables, so the effects of the wind are subtle and soothing. A more abrupt jiggling is felt when someone inside the sphere moves. "My favourite time in the sphere," says sphere-creator Tom Chudleigh, "is after the lights are out. It's like being in a nutshell that's decorated like a palace. It feels like you are floating in the canopy among the sleeping birds." And the best part? Built-in speakers take advantage of the sphere's natural acoustics, so don't forget your favourite music or video-watching device. Children under 14 are not permitted for insurance reasons.
Eve (sleeps two) is $125/night, $199 for two nights.
Eryn (sleeps three) is $175/night, $299 for two nights, plus an additional $35/night for a third person.
