Swim with the belugas in Manitoba

The city of Churchill, on the shores of Hudson Bay, proudly calls itself the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” but that hasn’t stopped some of the town’s tour operators from branching out beyond their original ursine mandate. Another mammalian spectacle is available: visitors can go kayaking alongside the bay’s beluga whales or even hop in the water and go snorkelling with them.

Sea North Tours (tel: 888-348-7591; www.seanorthtours.com) charges $170 (including taxes) for a two-hour snorkelling sortie. Lazy Bear Lodge (tel: 866-687-2327; www.lazybearlodge.com), which offers three-hour snorkelling tours for $204 plus tax, advises swimmers, “We are not responsible for jealous spouses in the event that a client kisses one of the curious beluga whales.”
