Where to eat when in.... Sydney, Australia

A Markham FM gets a taste of retro Aussie comfort food

Have you ever had a nostalgic experience that left such a powerful taste that you can happily reminisce about it years later? Well, the food served at Harry’s Cafe de Wheels in Sydney left just such a delectable taste in my mouth. Often when I'm hungry, I crave to eat that food again!

Set right in the heart of Sydney’s famous harbour is Harry’s Cafe de Wheels. Despite being a roadside stand, it doesn't fail to attract a huge crowd on a regular basis. Tourists visiting the opera house, Sydney harbour, the botanical garden and other iconic sights nearby have heard about this place and drop by to satisfy their taste buds.

It's best known for serving Australian pies — single serving short-crust pastry shells with a variety of savoury fillings. Some of the mouth-watering signature dishes here include Harry’s Tiger pie, a meat pie served topped with mashed peas and gravy, named after the founder. Other classics include chicken and mushroom pie, lean beef and curry pie and many more. They also serve an array of scrumptious desserts like chocolate mud cake, custard tart and apple tart.

You can trace the café back to the years of Great Depression. An enterprising man named Harry Edwards opened a caravan café next to the gates of the Woolloomoolloo naval dockyard. Harry operated this place until 1938 after which he enlisted to serve in the war. During Harry’s time in the Middle East, he was nicknamed “Tiger” because of his boxing skills and the name stuck. When he returned in 1945, Harry reopened the caravan and it has been operating since then.

The original location is open 18 hours a day. And there are now five other locations of this legendary café around Sydney – including one at Terminal 2 at the airport.
