Where to eat when in.... Udaipur, India

A Montreal FM assembles a United Nations of travellers at a lakeside restaurant in Rajasthan

In March 2008, I travelled to India with my friend and fellow MD Steven. We stumbled upon this beautiful outdoor lakeside restaurant at the edge of a small peninsula on Lake Pichola in Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan in northern India.

Throughout the day we assembled an interesting group of international travellers as we soaked in the beautiful city. At breakfast, we met Stephanie, a Canadian journalist on holiday from a two-month tour covering our troops in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

In the afternoon we met four friendly Norwegians as we shared pre-dinner drinks at a nearby rooftop hotel pool. And finally, we received a text message from two Swiss girls we had met in a restaurant in the neighbouring city of Jaipur, who were looking forward to joining all of us for dinner.

We rallied the group and made a reservation at the lakeside Ambrai Restaurant. Our 9PM reservation meant we ended up being seated at 10PM. A round of drinks and interesting conversation kept us occupied until the food arrived.

We ordered family style and shared a host of vegetarian northern Indian dishes and a couple of meat dishes. Of course, naan bread and papadams accompanied all the delicious sauces.

After dinner, we all got up and sang our national anthems for each other to the amusement of the other guests at the restaurant. We even got the Indian waiters to sing us their national anthem.

We lost track of time, typical of any magical night. The waiters repeatedly asked us if there was anything else we needed, as they wanted to go home. We were so absorbed in our experience that we failed to notice when they finally gave up on us and went home, leaving us as the only customers in the restaurant. At 3:30AM, we finally dispersed. The evening left a lasting impression on all of us.
