Where to eat when in.... Westport, Ireland

An Ontario FM finds casual comfort in the unlikeliest place

If you walked by the Quay Cottage Restaurant you’d think it unlikely that you could get much of a meal inside. It looks like a small Irish cottage perched beside the water on the quay in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland.

It opens only for dinner and can surprisingly seat about 80 folk. If you’re lucky enough to get a table (reserve by phone or email) you’ll be rewarded with some of the best seafood and shellfish dishes in Ireland. They only use fresh fish landed only metres away and their menu changes daily to reflect what’s available.

To start, I would recommend the chowder of the day: a blend of fresh fish and lots of vegetables in an enticing broth. For the main course, I recommend monkfish tail (if available) served on fresh tagliatelle with a raita dressing; the monkfish tasted surprisingly like lobster. And don't miss the homemade Irish bread — it’s another treat.

The decor is rustic with pine tables, lots of nautical antiques, and lobster pots and fishing nets. The service is that rare blend of making you feel comfortable and at home, and bringing what you need at the just right moment. It’s a well-run restaurant with great food and atmosphere!
