Where to eat when in… Grosses Coques, NS

An FM heads up the coast of Baie Sainte-Marie for traditional Acadian fare

Chez Christophe is situated in the heart of Nova Scotia's French Acadian region. It boasts the freshest seafood available year-round. There are no deep-fried items on the menu here: everything is prepared fresh daily. The scallops are pan seared to a golden brown and are as big as dollar pancakes. The haddock is fresh and cooked to perfection, pan-fried in butter.

Chez Christophe is located in an old family homestead built in 1837 by chef Paul Comeau’s great-great-grandfather Christophe (hence the restaurant's name). There are three dining areas, including one in the original kitchen adorned with an old wood stove.

During the summer months, on Thursdays and Friday nights, local musicians come in to play a real kitchen party to the delight of those dining. And you’ll often find Paul himself coming out to greet patrons.

Paul whips up a creamed lobster that you’ll never forget. It is chock full of lobster in a cream base, and served over toast, accompanied by potatoes and veggies. Garlic shrimp, one of my personal favourites, are succulent and juicy, never overdone.

Paul will also introduce you to local Acadian cuisine with dishes that are potato-based such as fricot (stew) and pâté à la râpure (rappie pie). These dishes are very tasty but may take a little bit of getting used to. Paul believes in buying local produce for his establishment. Deserts are made locally and include an assortment of homemade pies and fruit crumbles. If you find yourself in the heart of the Acadian region, drop in to Chez Christophe and enjoy our local seafood - you won’t find anything like it anywhere else.
