The Harrow Fair Cookbook: Prize-Winning Recipes Inspired by Canada’s Favourite Country Fair

The Harrow Fair in Essex County, ON, has been drawing visitors since 1854. In the beginning, it was farmers who came, to talk and trade, but nowadays 70,000 people come every Labour Day weekend for the handmade crafts, live bands, tractor pulls and “domestic-science” contests — aka the food!

Harrow, population 3000, is on the same latitude as Northern California and Tuscany. Essex County, also known as the “Sun Parlour of Canada,” has a temperate climate and the longest growing season in the country. Yum.

The 150 recipes in The Harrow Fair Cookbook (Whitecap Books) were inspired by the farmland as well as the freshwater fishing of Lake Erie (see the chowder that follows). Nineteen of them are first-prize contest winners; they’re guaranteed to be winners on your table in any season.
