The New Comfort Food: Home Cooking from Around the World

What does comfort food make you think of? Chicken soup? Mac and cheese? Maybe meatloaf? James Oseland, editor of Saveur magazine, thinks of golden potato latkes, creamy spiced Indian lentils and red-chili chicken enchiladas. At least, we assume he does, because those are three of the recipes in The New Comfort Food: Home Cooking from Around the World, published by Chronicle Books. And he’s right, of course. After all, every cuisine the world over has its own comfort food: honest, home-style dishes that you’ve known and loved forever; the kind you ate as kids and yearn for as adults. Here are three — one from Italy, one from Hungary and one from our own Cape Breton Island — that’ll make your comfort-food vocabulary that much broader.
