Vij's at Home — Relax, Honey: The Warmth and Ease of Indian Cooking

Celebrity chefs make it look easy. In their restaurants — that is. But when it comes to the very mundane reality of juggling long working hours with family meals, chefs are no different than the rest of us. (Okay, their end result will taste infinitely better than ours.) For Vancouver’s masterful husband-and-wife team of Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala, whose restaurants Vij’s and Rangoli can still broaden the taste buds of the most worldly of eaters, family meals came together and evolved as their two daughters grew.

The family then had to juggle work schedules (remember, they both have restaurants to run), different eating preferences and deal with the inevitable conflicts that always arise between two chefs with two very different cooking styles.

The rhythm they eventually found actually does makes Indian cooking look easy — even for the rest of us. Their latest cookbook, Vij’s At Home: Relax, Honey (published by Douglas and McIntyre), provides plenty of recipes that are healthy and easy for work nights, and more elaborate for weekend nights with guest. Here are but three of our favourites.
