A bag you can wear

What would you get if you took a great messenger bag filled with useful pockets, super-sized it and added sleeves and a hood? You'd get the SCOTTeVEST REVOLUTION TRAVEL JACKET. With 26 pockets, this is some serious wearable gear that could quite easily replace a backpack or shoulder bag. Also, because it's not a bag, it's not subject to airline regulations, no matter how many souvenirs you fill it with.

And fill it you can: there are dedicated pockets for an iPad or 10" netbook, a clear pocket for your cell phone (so you can see who's calling before you pull it out), pockets for pens and a camera and iPod, a secure pocket for travel documents, hidden conduits to keep your headphone wires tangle free, a pocket that acts as a water bottle holder, an extendable key holder, zippered change pockets, and more.

So how do they pull this off without you looking like you're a well-laden pack animal? For one thing Scottevest developed a Weight Management System built into the jacket to comfortably redistribute the load you're carrying. The design is simple and sleek, and most importantly the pockets are bulge-proof, putting those geeky-looking photographer's jackets to shame. This breathable jacket is waterproof with sealed seams to ensure all your electronics don't get soaked. And the hood and sleeves are detachable so it can take you from chilly morning to balmy afternoon during a long day of visiting.

The only downside? You may need to develop your own Dewey Decimal system to file your belongings. Graphic labels on some of the pockets offer suggested uses and can help you remember where you put things. But if you've ever patted your pockets while looking for your keys, you can imagine that 26 pockets — instead of the usual four — can lead to quite a bit of frustration if you're not methodical.

Available in black only. $175 for all-season version (pictured). $200 for the Revolution Plus, with insulated lining. Shipping starts at US$25, not including duties.
