Slopeside freebies for newbies

If you've always wanted to learn to ski or snowboard but never quite got around to it, the strong loonie and an avalanche of deals from slopes in the US should be just the kick in the ski pants you need. Ski Vermont is offering a number of freebies aimed at beginners as part of January's Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month.

Free ski lessons will be available between January 3 and 9 at participating hills. The deal, for adults and kids over eight, includes a beginner's lift pass, a group lesson and equipment rental.

If you're shy, you could take advantage of their learn-with-a-pal package (buy one beginner's package and receive the second free) in January. There is also a bring-a-friend promotion for more experienced skiers/snowboarders who can buy a day pass for themselves and receive a free beginner's package for a friend.

To take advantage of these promotions you must pre-register online in their Events and Deals section. skivermont.com.
