A feminist first in Vancouver

In a year when feminists’ hopes for a female US president were met with the conservative, anti-choice, vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin instead of Hillary Clinton, it’s a relief to many to return — if only briefly — to the heyday of the feminist movement. That’s the goal of the first-ever major survey of feminism and art, Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution, which features more than 300 feminist artworks from the 1960s and ’70s (even if you’re inclined to skip the Yoko Ono films, there’s still plenty to see), now showing at the Vancouver Art Gallery until January 11, 2009. Reviews from the show’s US stops have called it thrilling and historical. (604) 662-4719; www.vanartgallery.bc.ca/the_exhibitions/exhibit_wack.html .
