Athens' New Acropolis Museum

The controversial New Acropolis Museum in Athens is set to open in early 2009 (the ground floor is already open to the public). Although some balked at the idea of the ultra-modern, glass-and-steel design, architect Bernard Tschumi couldn’t bring himself to try to replicate the original temple, which sits just 300 metres away. This is the first time all 4000 surviving artifacts of the Acropolis will be shown together. Replicas of the Elgin Marbles will also be displayed, with the hope that the originals — which the Greek government has been trying to reclaim from the British Museum for around 200 years — will be returning home soon.
