Avant-garde in Chicago

The “2.0” in this month’s Chicago Artists Month 2.0 doesn’t signify the age of the arts festival (actually 14 years), but rather the new Web 2.0 spirit of interactivity that the city’s artists have tapped for their experimentalist inspiration.

Amanda Williams presents her Receipt Project, created with contributions for which she paid one cent apiece via Facebook; Doug Smithenry exhibits paintings of gay teens coming out on YouTube; and, perhaps most intriguing of the strange and
sundry projects on display, Barbara Hashimoto unveils her
enviro-art piece via video-link, showing off a sculpted collection of all the junk mail she’s received since 2007. Weird doesn’t begin to describe it, but, as with the city at large, you definitely won’t be bored. .
