The best hostels in Europe

There are hostels and then there are hostels, the latter kind being the ones that really give you the heebie-jeebies. To make sure your kid doesn’t get that all over icky feeling when he or she hits Europe this summer, tell them about the Hoscars (hostelworld.com/hoscars-2011).

Yep, they're like the Oscars, but with a little less class. They are the world’s most prestigious hostel awards, voted on by one million Hostelworld.com users. More than 25,000 properties in 6000 destinations were eligible for the February awards.

Which properties came out on top? Three in Lisbon: Travellers House (from $22 a night; travellershouse.com); Lisbon Lounge Hostel and sister property Living Lounge Hostel (both from $26 a night; both lisbonloungehostel.com).

Not convinced? No worries. Hotel.com’s 2010 Hotel Price Index ranks Lisbon (tied with Budapest) as the third city in the world for affordable luxury. A five-star hotel room in these cities will run you a mere $160 a night. Number one and two for affordable luxury? Warsaw and Marrakech.
