Better with age

Onetime GM of CP Rail, Sir William Cornelius Van Horne, is famously known for saying, “If we can't export the scenery, we'll import the tourists.” Did his plan ever work. Canada’s Castle in the Rockies, aka the Fairmont Banff Springs, was his inspiration — albeit to enhance traffic on the CPR — and the UNESCO World Heritage Site turns 125 this year. To celebrate, the royal suite, complete with grand piano and chandelier, has been smartened up, as have the Terrace Suites that overlook the Bow Valley. MDs with more modest taste might prefer to partake in a heritage tour, however. Hosted by the hotel ambassador in the Heritage Hall Tuesdays to Saturdays at 3pm, the chitchat covers the hotel’s chateau style and legendary guests: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe. Each month through 2013, there’ll also be an artist in residence. He or she will create hotel-inspired pieces in designated areas for guests to observe the works in progress. Anniversary golf and spa packages are available. tel: (866) 540-4406; fairmont.com/banff-springs.
