Cirque in Mexique

Fittingly enough, Cirque du Soleil is heading to sunny Mexico. The Montreal-based company is partnering with a resort developer, Grupo Vidanta, to build a 600-seat dinner theatre in Riviera Maya, outside Cancún, which will house a yet-to-be-announced show. The company promises that “world-class dining and champagne will be integrated with the spectacle.” We’ve never tried pairing filet mignon and bubbly with artistic acrobatics, but you’d have to assume they go well together. It will be the Cirque’s first residency outside of Las Vegas or Orlando. Both of those cities’ shows seat around 1600, so the Cirque du Soleil and Grupo Vidanta are trying to design the theatre to give a more intimate experience. The premiere is scheduled for November 2014. Updates at cirquedusoleil.com/rivieramaya.
