Coasting PEI

We think that gran fondos should be renamed grand fondos. Loosely translated from Italian, the “big [bicycle] rides” are becoming more popular every summer. In addition to the Banff, Whistler and Niagara Falls mass cycling events this August 24, September 7 and September 14, respectively, Atlantic Canada will host its first ever gran fondo on PEI August 24. The big Saturday ride will be 150 kilometres long; the medio ride will be 50 kilometres shorter. Starting in Charlottetown, both will include climb and sprints sections and both will bring peddlers past pretty-as-a-picture fishing villages, sand dunes and hardwood groves. Cyclists will be so close to the Atlantic Ocean that they’ll almost taste the salt water. There are two shorter 58-kilometre circuits scheduled for Friday and Sunday. Registration is $225 plus tax. Participants must be at least 16 years old. For details and a map of the route with elevations: granfondo-pei.ca.
