Disney does Hawaii

Disney recently opened a new resort and spa, and it’s miles away from a theme park. Aulani is in Oahu, Hawaii within the Ko Olina resort, 27 kilometres from the Honolulu International Airport. When the 8.5-hectare beachfront hotel is fully completed in 2013, its two towers will feature 359 rooms and 481 villas. Aulani means “a messenger of a chief” and the resort wants to be just that: a messenger of the Hawaiian spirit, people and culture. Its open-air lobby, for instance, features a 3.5-by-3.5-metre compass rose embedded into the coral and lava-stone floor that corresponds to ancient Hawaiian directions: it points upwards towards the sea; down to the mountainside; the left to the feminine side of the resort; the right to the masculine side. There’s more than 50 pieces of contemporary Hawaiian art throughout the hotel; its grounds are populated with Menehune, the legendary “little people” of Hawaii. Of course, this is Disney so in between all the patterned textiles inspired by Hawaiian kappa cloth, there are “hidden Mickeys” and your kids will no doubt find them.
