Europe opens its skies to Canada

Canadian travellers stand to benefit from a new “open skies” treaty to be signed with the European Union. The treaty, which was signed in early May in Brussels, will lift restrictions on European airlines that forced their Canada-bound flights to depart only from their home countries. Without that restriction, competition amongst European carriers, as well as between the European airlines and Air Canada, is expected to increase on trans-Atlantic routes, theoretically driving prices down. A later phase of the agreement will permit European airlines to fly via Canada to destinations outside Europe and will also allow them to offer domestic flights in Canada, and vice versa.
