Island overload

Italy's leading heritage group is begging the UN to put Venice on its UNESCO endangered list. According to Italia Nostra, mass tourism, development projects and plain old environmental neglect will destroy the city on stilts and its lagoon. The group wants to cap the number of tourists allowed in each day, with large groups having to make reservations. It also wants large ships banned from entering the lagoon and the Grand Canal because they damage the already fragile foundations of centuries-old historic buildings.
