Medicine meets art in London

It’s no coincidence that we often think of art as therapeutic and the practice of medicine as a kind of art rather than strict science. The two have influenced one another for hundreds of years, from the ancient Greeks to Leonardo da Vinci. In recent years, with the intersection of diagnostic imaging with modernist art, that cross-pollination has reached new heights. Beginning March 16 to 21, 2009, the British Institute of Radiology will put on an ambitious exhibition that looks not only at the historical link between art and medicine, but will present recent, medically inspired works by seven highly talented artists, including Benedetta Bonichi’s beautiful X-rays and Susan Aldworth’s wildly inventive variations on diagnostic imaging scans. Best of all, entrance is free. (011-44-207) 307-1400; www.bir.org.uk/the_art_of_medicine1.html
