A musical homecoming

Turns out The Sound of Music isn’t one of Salzburg’s “Favourite Things.” The 1959 hit musical that helped make the town famous had its stage premiere there this past October 23. Carl Philip von Maldeghem, the artistic director of the Salzburger Landestheater where the production will be staged, told the UK’s The Guardian newspaper that the musical has been an embarrassing reminder of Austria’s role in WWII for decades: “Salzburg, like most of Austria, was unable or unwilling to confront its past for a long time.” Maybe, but that hasn’t stopped tourists from flocking to the 1965 film version’s iconic settings and it certainly hasn’t stopped the sale of tickets for this new production; they’re sold out through next January. The show runs until June. In German with English subtitles. Tix: $23 to $72. salzburger-landestheater.at.
