A new playground for Porsche

The Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany might very well be the ultimate amusement park for adults. Volkswagen’s production-facility-cum-theme park, 230 kilometres west of Berlin, even has rides. Its two 48-metre-tall glass silos containing 400 cars each feature a panoramic glass lift that seats six plus a guide; it takes guests — in air-conditioned comfort, no less — up the tower past storeys and storeys of brand-spanking new cars to its observation deck on the 20th floor for an overview of one of the largest car manufacturers in Europe and for views of southwestern Lower Saxony, too. In addition to its Audi and Lamborghini pavilions, the Autostadt’s newest addition is its Porsche pavilion; it’s a beauty. Inspired by a monocoque (French for single shell), the spatial, self-supporting, stainless-steel structure contains the car (and many more) in this famous Ferdinand Porsche quote: “In the beginning, I looked around, but couldn’t find the car of my dreams. So I decided to build it myself.” His dream come true? A 1948 Porsche 356. Admission: adults $20, kids 6 to 17 $8. The panoramic lift is an additional $11 and $5, respectively. autostadt.de. [CC]
