The new ship in the sea

Beginning in May 2015, Viking Cruises will explore new waters, but not in the way that you might think. The 16-year-old company is launching an all-new ocean cruise line — a travel industry first in nearly a decade — alongside its award-winning river cruise line. Its first ship will be called the Viking Star; its 10- to 15-day maiden itineraries will set sail from Scandinavia (from Bergen in Norway and Stockholm) and the Mediterranean (Barcelona and Venice). The 928-passenger vessel will be Scandi in design and all of its staterooms will feature king beds and private verandas. The ship will feature an infinity pool cantilevered off the stern and its spa will include a snow grotto where snowflakes created using chilled air will gently fall from the “sky.” Introductory two-for-one pricing ranges from between US$2999 to $4999 per person with discounted airfares from US$695 to $895. tel: (800) 304-9616; vikingrivercruises.com.
