Opening with a splash in Ottawa

Where do you find 25-metre-long extreme waterslides, a half-kilometre jungle river winding past a 4800-square-metre wave pool and enough picnic tables and green space for 12,000 visitors a day? Orlando? Nope. Niagara Falls? Not even.

Think Ottawa. Yes, that Ottawa. Or rather 20 minutes from our capital and about an hour from Montreal. If you haven’t already heard, Calypso, Canada’s largest water park, is now open for business with more than 35 waterslides, separate toddler and kiddie areas and the country’s largest wave pool.

There are restaurants, shops (where you can pay with your fingerprint — no running back to your bag for your cash), splash pads, a beach and, of course, water — millions of litres of it kept at a constant 27°C and filtered every 90 minutes — every 30 minutes in toddler pools.

Highlights for thrill-seekers include the Zoomerang, the Black Hole and Turbulence, which, according to the park flyer, feature steep chutes and 360° curves in total darkness! Sounds like heart-pounding fun. Open until September 6.
