Pack or rent the skis?

When you head out on your ski or snowboard holiday, make sure you’re aware of the airline’s policies on checking your luggage and ski or snowboard bags to avoid extra fees. After your initial bag, Air Canada and WestJet limit you to just one other piece of checked baggage. To take a third will cost you a whopping $100 on Air Canada or $75 on WestJet. In the US, the situation is even worse. This is the first ski season since nearly all major American carriers ceased offering free checked baggage last year. Now, checking two bags will run you US$40 per person — each way — and don’t even ask what a third will cost. Maybe it’s finally time to give in, leave your skis at home and start renting. After all, who hasn’t been tempted to take those new parabolics on a test run?
