Paris’ Pompidou comes to TO

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) will be the only North American venue to host *Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde: Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris, October 18 through January 15, 2012. The exhibit will examine how Marc Chagall’s Russian heritage influenced his art and how he both embraced and rejected broader art movements while developing his own colourful and whimsical style.

One hundred and eighteen pieces will be on display, including 32 by Chagall, many which rarely leave Paris’ Centre Pompidou, eight by Wassily Kandinsky, often described as the founder of abstract art, and many more by visionaries of Russian modernism. In celebration of the premiere, the AGO will host a lavish, black-tie Chagall Ball on October 15. Despite $1500 tickets, last year’s Maharaja Gala sold out in advance. The exhibit: adults $25; seniors $21.50; students and kids six to 17 $16.50; kids under five free. (877) 225-4246;
