Perfect strangers

Most MDs bring their spouse and/or family with them when they conference. Some, however, don’t. If you’re one of the latter, and a woman, Invite for a Bite wants to help you with what might be the most dreaded part of a solo trip: eating dinner alone. The spanking new website created by Cressida Howard of England lets female travellers “Create an Invite” so that they can enjoy the company of another woman for a meal (or event) during their next unaccompanied (working?) vacation. You have to be a member to extend an invite (free to join), but you can search current invites — which includes info like where, when and age range — without logging on. The site is for women only; if it weren’t, it might resemble a dating site to some and things could very weird, very fast. Even so, the site recognizes that meeting strangers in a strange city can be dangerous, so there’s a page with safety tips: don't post private info, meet in a public place, if you feel unsafe, don't stay out of politeness; leave.
