Of pilgrims and Poles

Going to Rome in May? Good luck. There are going to be millions of pilgrims there to attend Pope John Paul II beatification ceremony on the first of the month, an event that will bring the popular Pole just one little miracle away from becoming a saint. What’s far from saintly is the cost of a hotel room around that date. Some hotels have raised their rates by 300 percent. No kidding. The Polish media has reported that Poles alone will spend around $350 million in the capital around that date.

What’s worse, May 1 is also Labour Day in much of Europe including Italy, so many of the inns are indeed full. Religious institutions made an extra 15,000 beds available to help with the strain, but they were snatched up within 24 hours. Try venere.com for budget beds and apartments.
