Puttin’ on the Ritz

Winston Churchill stayed here. The Queen Mother did too. So did Richard Nixon and Charles de Gaulle, though, not together. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were together though, celebrating their first marriage. “Here” is, of course, the 100-year-old Ritz-Carlton Montreal, which recently reopened after a four-year, US$200-million restoration. Also known as the Grande Dame of Sherbrooke Street, the building’s façade was restored, as was its lobby, Palm Court (which is modelled after London’s own tea room), Oval ballroom, garden and guestrooms too. The Maison Boulud resto is altogether new, so is the Tiffany and Co. boutique and a wing of 45 luxe residences, half of which have already been sold. tel: (514) 842-4212; ritzmontreal.com
