Putting the brakes on TO’s Bixis

It looked like the city of Toronto would get its own Bixi short-term bike-rental system, modelled after the popular new Montreal system, as soon as this spring. Toronto’s city council seemed keen on importing the popular and inexpensive Bixi, like Boston, London, Melbourne and Minneapolis already have. However, the Toronto system is now delayed.

Bixi reportedly led the city to believe the system would come at no cost, but now wants Toronto to chip in. A tight city budget could put the brakes on the whole idea, though negotiations continue. Cycling enthusiasts have called for a letter-writing campaign to convince city councillors to act.
