Comedian Steve Martin brings The Idea of the North to the AGO
On now through September 18, The Idea of North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario is curated, in part, by actor and comedian Steve Martin. Ontario-born Lawren Harris (1885 –1970) is a founding member of the Group of Seven. His paintings evolved from decorative Impressionist-influenced landscapes to stark portraits of the North to geometric abstractions. The show opens with some of Harris’ early paintings from the 1910s, including many of Toronto’s working-class Ward neighbourhood where Harris spent his formative years. It then continues with more than 30 of Harris’ most significant and rare northern landscapes from the 1920s and 1930s. Over 80 works are on view. Timed tickets: adults $25, kids six to 17 $16.50. tel: (877) 225-4246; ago.net
