Squamish gets a gondola

North Vancouver has the Grouse Mountain Skyride, and Whistler has its Peak-2-Peak, so it figures that nearby Squamish would be getting its own gondola as well. Construction has started on the $22-million Sea to Sky Gondola, set to open in May 2014. The privately funded project will see 20 Swiss-made eight-passenger gondola cars take up to 600 people an hour to the Habrich Ridge, overlooking the famous Stawamus Chief granite formation. At the top, 853 metres above sea level, there will be a restaurant, café, nature trails and a 110-metre suspension bridge leading to a lookout platform of Howe Sound. A hiking path to the top is also being prepared. seatoskygondola.com.
