Streetcars named desire

There’ll be a lot more clang, clang, clang of the trolley throughout the US this year thanks to a grant from the country’s Department of Transportation for long-term projects. New streetcars will add charm to many all-but-dead commercial neighbourhoods, while also cutting down fuel consumption and relieving congestion. New Orleans’ new mile-long (1.6-kilometre) line is scheduled to open this month; it’ll run from the Union Passenger (Amtrak) Terminal to the French Quarter making it the fourth streetcar line in a city that’s already home to one of the oldest continuously operating lines in the world. Atlanta is scheduled to get a new streetcar too as is Dallas, Salt Lake City, Tucson and Washington, DC. [CC]
