The ultimate family reunion

Throughout 2013, Ireland will be full of craic. What country wouldn’t be with a year-long sched of countrywide festivals and party invitations sent out to 70 million people with Irish connections worldwide? Yes, craic, or good times, will no doubt be had by all at this year’s The Gathering, really just a giant Irish reunion. Good times will be had at, for example, the May 1 World Irish Stew Championship in County Sligo and at the June 7 to 9 International Quilt Festival in Galway. Good times will also be had at the July 19 Welly Throwing Championship in County Cork. Three thousand events are planned through 2013, some with Irish-Canadians — five-million strong! — in mind. Canada Come Home, September 13 to 15 at the Coolattin Estate in County Wicklow, commemorates the experiences of the 6000 people who left Coolattin for a new life in Canada during the Assisted Clearances of 1847 to 1856.
