An “un-cruise” for outdoorsy types

You've heard about big-ship cruises, but right now, we want to tell you about something a little cooler: the un-cruise. That’s exactly the word that four-year-old, Seattle-based InnerSea Discoveries uses to describe their hands-on packages to Alaska via small expedition boats that can accommodate up to 86 passengers.

The company’s latest offering is Alaska Unleashed: an amped-up, multi-sport, seven-night adventure for 36 like-minded travellers that begins in Ketchikan and ends in Juneau. It’s designed for people who regularly engage in physical activity equal to a 40-kilometre bike ride or 8-kilometre run/hike and includes kayaking among icebergs and waterfalls, hiking through “boot-sucking mud,” even standup paddleboarding and snorkelling.

Summer 2013 departures start at $5595 (plus taxes and fees) and includes onboard meals, entry fees, some activities/equipment, use of the on-deck hot tub and sauna, and (mercifully!) a massage. (888) 862-8881; innerseadiscoveries.com.
