Ring rivalry

Ring Nuts — that's the name given to groupies who follow productions of Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, or Der Ring des Nibelungen, around the same way Deadheads followed the Grateful Dead — are spoiled for choice this season with two new productions of the four-part opera in three great cities.

The first, a co-production between Milan's Teatro alla Scala and Berlin's Staatsoper unter den Linden, premiered the first opera in the tetralogy, Das Rheingold, in Milan in May. Part two, Die Walküre, opens there December 7. The full cycle, which runs about 15 hours, will be performed in Berlin in March 2013 and in Milan in June 2013.;

The New York Metropolitan Opera's version is being staged by Canada's own Robert Lepage. The $16 million high-tech extravaganza opened to mixed reviews in late September with Das Rheingold, which runs until April 2. The entire cycle will be performed in the spring of 2012 and 2013.
