Your head in the clouds

If ever there was a doubt that the journey is as important as the destination, Switzerland’s new CabriO cable car will squash those reservations. The double-decker cable car is the world’s first with a roofless upper deck. Thirty people can fit upstairs (60 on the lower level) and the views to the top of Mount Stanserhorn, 15 minutes from Lucerne, are pretty much indescribable. Once at the top, the 1900-metre-tall Stanserhorn features views of ten lakes, 100 kilometers of the Alpine mountain range and three countries. A hike around the peak takes 30 minutes and there’s a revolving restaurant up there too. The cable car cost $30.5 million to construct and was almost entirely Swiss made. No kidding the Swiss Post Office put the thing on a stamp last May. Open until November 17. The Stans to Stanserhorn route costs $75 for adults roundtrip, but you can descend via two other routes for $50 roundtrip.
