SANIBEL ISLAND
Dreaming of an island minus the highrises? Enter Sanibel Island,
voted one of North America's top islands in
Condé Nast's
2006 Readers Choice Awards. And why not? Measuring almost 20
kilometres long and eight kilometres wide, the barrier island, located
23 kilometres west of Fort Myers, is largely without bright lights
(not even stoplights) and noise. While there, stay at the Tarpon
Tale Inn on Periwinkle Way, the island's main street. Built in the
1960s, the building was completely renovated in 1996. It consists
of five attached cottages and three suites ranging in size from
28 to 65 square metres. All of the cottages have queen-sized beds,
full kitchens equipped with fridges and stoves as well as their
own patios. The suites have mini fridges and microwaves. High-season
suite rates start at US$149 a night or US$973 a week; cottages start
at US$189 a night or US$1253 a week. Rates include breakfast, beach
chairs, umbrellas and towels, as well as two adult bikes. (888)
