Sling bags

The beauty of a sling bag is that its single-strap design makes getting to its contents so simple: just slide the strap around your torso and what was in back, is now in front. Mountain Equipment Co-op’s seven-litre Pod Slingpack ($25) features a padded underside; its exterior is 3-D mesh for breathability. There’s a zippered, cell-phone pocket on the strap plus elastic loops to guide headphone wires and another outer pocket for, say, a small water bottle. Inside the biggest zippered compartment, there’s a wallet-sized pouch and key clip. There’s a right-hand and left-hand version of the bag. Patagonia’s Atom Bag (*$55) is also seven litres, but it features a water-repellent fabric finish and an added a stow-away waist belt to keep the bag close to your torso when hiking or biking. There are also adjustable buckles on the front for strapping things, like a sweater for example, to the exterior. Both are available in an assortment of colours. mec.ca; patagonia.com.
