Buenos Aires from US$35 a night

ALMIRANTE BROWN If you always opt for the quaint and quiet when you travel, consider staying at Teresita B&B. This home-away-from-home is a 45-minute train trip from downtown in Adrogue, adored for its cobblestone streets, lush trees and mom-and-pop shops in Almirante Brown County. Built in 1995, the adorable B&B has been in business for two years. Besides a bedroom for one in the main property (its bathroom is shared), the B&B has a detached guesthouse with twin beds and its own bathroom. Both the bedroom and guesthouse are simple in style (exposed wood and terracotta tile). The B&B has a garden with a barbecue and brick oven that guests can use and an outdoor pool. Argentinean cooking lessons, anyone? The B&B offers those too. Conducted by co-owner Teresita, (her co-owner husband is a pediatrican) classes start at US$45. Not sold yet? Consider this. The bedroom for one is US$35 a night; the guesthouse for two US$40, breakfast included. (011-54-11) 4293-5992.

RECOLETA Okay, so you prefer to be in the thick of things. Close to the finest restaurants and shops. The Art Hotel in the exclusive Recoleta neighbourhood is your ticket. It’s also only five minutes from downtown. Housed in a 1927 structure, the hotel opened in 2004. It has 36 cosy rooms, each with its own bathroom and decorated romantically: arched doorways, dimmable lights. Most beds are doubles — except for nine rooms that have twins — and have canopy frames. There’s an art gallery on the ground level that displays different paintings, photographs and sculptures by acclaimed Argentinean artists every month. There’s also a patio on the roof where guests can soak in the sun. Rooms with twins start at US$65, ones with doubles start at US$85, breakfast included. (011-54-11) 4821-4744.

PALERMO HOLLYWOOD For an area that’s green and groovy, crash at the Krista boutique hotel in one of leafy Palermo Viejo’s subdivisions, Hollywood (the other is Soho), formerly home to a lot of Argentinean film studios, now home to a lot of bars and restaurants. Built in the early 1900s, Krista is the former mansion of the personal physician to President Juan Perón and his second wife Eva (Evita) Perón. The chic hotel, complete with arched doorways and stained-glass windows, has 10 bedrooms, each decorated individually and with their own bathroom. The hotel also has a greenhouse, outdoor patios and plans for a pool. Rooms start at US$110, including breakfast. (011-54-11) 4771-4697 .
